The class will introduce fine arts of the 20th and early 21st centuries in the context and framework of political discussions.
Art has played various, but highly relevant roles with the political and social debates in China’s 20th and 20st centuries. It has been:
- an intended and contested agent of reforms in the Republican era,
- an educational and propagandistic instrument in socialist realism
- a core means of the Cultural Revolution,
- together with literature the discursive and experimental agent during the Cultural Fever of the 80ies with its discussion on potential societal and political developments.
- In the 90ies Political Pop was the forerunner for a commodification of art products and the starting point for an international visibility of Chinese modern art.
- In the new century the commercialized global perspective of Chinese art had to come to terms with the new regulatory frameworks and restrictions within China.
We will look at works of art, texts of and about artists and their positions, as well as state documents such as official guidelines and regulations.
The course aims at giving an overview of developments in art and the discursive framework.
