"What is peculiarly 'Irish' about the Gothic tradition is that it emerged from a geographical zone which was defined as weird and bizarre", remarks Gothic scholar Jarlath Killeen. In this course, we will explore the representation of this 'weird and bizarre' zone in Irish Gothic literature of the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. Starting with Sheridan le Fanu, this class will explore the different branches of the Irish Gothic, from vampires to the Bog Gothic and from Northern Irish graveyards to homeless ghosts in contemporary Dublin.
