This seminar provides a detailed introduction to the phonetics and phonology of present-day English. We will cover a multitude of relevant concepts ranging from the phonemes of the English language and their articulatory features, phonological rules governing this system as well as connected speech phenomena, to syllable structure, phonotactics and the representation of pronunciation in spelling. We will also deal with pronunciation differences between the British and American English standards and dialects. Special attention will also be drawn to the phonetic and phonological characteristics of the German language as well as to a general comparative approach in phonology. Furthermore, the seminar will provide a thorough introduction to the practice of phonemic transcription.
