The first cartoon illustrates the way technology has influenced linguistic conventions to the extent that children struggle in English. The girl in the cartoon is so used to informal and abbreviated style common e.g. in text messages that she complains about her teacher not knowing how to spell correctly. 


By contrasting two situations, the second cartoon shows how the responsibility for a student’s performance has shifted from the pupil to the teacher. Whereas in 1960 parents would scold the child for bringing home a bad grade, it is now often the teacher that is blamed.
