This one-week workshop is designed to demonstrate methods of effective scientific communication across the domains of speaking and writing. Students will actively engage in discussion and apply these skills through collaborative group activities and receive feedback from peers and the instructors.
• To engage in discussion of science communication methods and demonstrate application of these topics to spoken and written communication
• To provide students with resources for effective communication of scientific topics (of their interest or relating to their research area) to a broad variety of audiences
• To provide students with the opportunity to develop and practice their scientific communication skills
This course will involve presentations on effective speaking practices, creating scientific illustrations for use in powerpoint and/or in preparing research conference posters, scientific writing, and the use of social media in communicating with the general public. It will include group work to actively engage participants in practicing skills and applying the learned topics to gain hands-on experience with peers and the instructors. Participants will receive constructive feedback from peers and the instructors to enable them to improve their scientific communication skills for use in the real world.

• The workshop will be in ENGLISH and is recommended for MSc and beginner-level PhD students.

• You will be graded (Pass or Fail) based on your participation during the workshop and group work, and completion of the assignments during the week. There will be no final exam.

Tentative Schedule
• Monday morning: Lecture on effective speaking and group exercises.
• Monday afternoon: Lecture on effective use of visual aids.
• Tuesday: No class. Complete assignment (create mini powerpoint or poster).
• Wednesday morning: Individual presentations and feedback.
• Wednesday afternoon: Lecture on effective “story-telling” and scientific writing
• Thursday: No class. Complete assignment (write a mini-abstract + lay summary)
• Friday morning: Group discussion on assignments and feedback.
• Friday afternoon: Lecture on effective use of social media for public engagement.
