In diesem praktischen Kurs werden amerikanische heilige Volkslieder aus der Sacred Harp Sammlung gesungen und geleitet. Diese Gesangstradition, die seit dem 18. Vermittelt wird ein weiterführendes Verständnis des Musik- und Notationsystems, des Repertoires, der Übertragungsmethoden, Ensemble-Interaktionen, Aufführungspraktiken, Aufführungskontexte und Werte der Kultur und Tradition des Sacred Harp. Die Teilnahme an Shaped Note Singing verbessert Fähigkeiten des Vom-Blattsingens und Gesang-Anleitens. Alle Studierende und Mitarbeitende sind herzlich willkommen.
This is a practical class in American shape note singing. In this mixed-voice, a cappella ensemble, we will sing the three- and four-part shape-note music as performed in the participatory, democratic and ardent singing tradition of the US South. The repertoire comes from "The Sacred Harp", comprising hymns, odes, and anthems written between the 16th and 20th centuries, as well as other sources containing religious and secular folk songs and hymns. The class will involve loud enthusiastic singing and will be excellent for acquiring or improving skills in conducting and especially in sight-singing. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the shaped note notation system and the unique social and musical values and performance practices of the shaped note community. New repertoire will be learned each semester. Both beginning and advanced students are encouraged to join.
This ensemble is open to all students; no audition is required. No previous vocal training is required, though students should have a love of singing. The ability to read musical notation is helpful but not mandatory (though students without notation reading skills should be prepared to put in additional practice time to learn their parts). Regular weekly participation is expected.
The digital version of the course provides opportunities for students to learn more about American shape note singing in practice and in theory. Audio and video learning materials as well as notation and articles will be available for self-guided learning.
