How are our ability and motivation to be creative shaped by the world around us? In this seminar, we will explore the social, cultural, and pedagogical factors that restrict or enhance the development of creativity. We will study examples from classical music, jazz, and folk/traditional musics in cross-cultural comparison. In addition to academic readings and discussions, we will also engage in practical exercises designed to help students overcome inhibitions and find the courage to take creative risks.

The first half of the class will be theoretical/academic and the second half of the class will be practical.

Language: The assigned readings and lectures will be in English. Student contributions to discussions and forums as well as student work/projects may be in either German or English according to student preference.
